Jerusalem Recognized as Capital of Israel, This is the Statement of Morocco Royal Office

NET ATJEH - Following information about a possible announcement by the United States of America of a recognition of Jerusalem as capital of Israel and moving the American embassy to the holy city, His Majesty King Mohammed VI held, today, a phone conversation with president of the Palestinian authority, His Excellency Mahmoud Abbas.

On this occasion, His Majesty the King, as sovereign of the Kingdom of Morocco, Commander of the Faithful and chairman of the Al Quds Committee, an arm of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), reiterated Morocco's strong and unwavering support for the brotherly Palestinian people in defending their just cause and legitimate rights, mainly concerning the status of Al Quds Asharif.

His Majesty the King also voiced his flat refusal of any action that could undermine the multi-religious aspect of the holy city or alter its legal and political status.

The Palestinian president, while hailing His Majesty the King's role and action, deplored the fact that the American administration's agenda includes such inappropriate initiative. He expressed the deep concern of the Palestinian authority over the serious consequences of this matter on the peace process in the Middle East and the region's security and stability.

His Majesty the King and the Palestinian president agreed to maintain a direct contact and continuous consultations on this issue, as well as a close coordination between the two governments to set, together, steps to take and actions to undertake. (21 Bir)
